To elevate our every day experience while supporting a sense of community was my goal with the artwork created for Colonie Center Mall. My hopes were to inspire a sense of joy and levity among the diverse community who walk the hallways of Colonie Center. The last two years the local and global community have experienced much darkness per the pandemic and economic hardship. The hallway mural is meant to be a celebration of our community resilience and hope for the future. My wish is the hallway walls may bring joy and hope to those who view them.
Over fourteen half walls were designed and painted per a thematic mural meant to soothe and support clients and staff at a Child Advocacy Center in Troy, NY. The greatest satisfaction was seeing kids come in, and enjoy the calming rainbows, clouds and the sailboat and glimmering sun. The murals brightened up their time and the staff’s who work hard fighting the good fight for children.
Troy has always felt to me like a beautiful mix of refinement and grit, with parts old world beauty and uncompromising innovation. It has always been this way it seems, and I felt the Uniting Line public art project was my visual opportunity to make Troy sing. It was where I lived and worked years ago and holds a special place for me always. During 2020 while the world was falling apart, the Uniting Line project felt like a bright spot to lift up my world and the community around me. I started researching Troy’s history, in aiming to vibrantly translate historical events visually into a modern, bright, welcoming aesthetic uniting downtown Troy upwards to North Central Troy, transforming the area under the bridge to be a proud, Trojan, beautiful, community area. Starting with the Hudson River as the foundation and going up the hill into more current times, the pillars’ design follow an iconic visual chronology of Troy’s history. The pillars feature moments in Troy’s history from Mohican legends and Dutch pottery, to powerful female forces in invention and worker’s rights, to shirt and steel industry booms and innovations, flourishing fodder for famous literature, baseball firsts, inspiring culture and diverse community. The opportunity to work on the Uniting Line Underpass project was a chance to build a dream landscape that elevates our every day commute and pedestrian life into a radiant, beautiful tomorrow. I've had the wonderful opportunity to work on projects that reimagine walls or surfaces in an effort to elevate our everyday experience. As the world is opening up this spring, our mutual shared space becomes amplified with the potential to be more. The recently launched Nomad Coworks, located in Clifton Park, NY, has an apple orchard outside, and offered a ripe spot for reimagining a coworking + work-life narrative on its main interior wall. Here's to dancing into spring and blooming forward.
